Christmas Celebrations in Edmonton

snow -10 °C

Nathan and I went out to The Copper Pot Restaurant overlooking the Legislature for a special Christmas meal.
The food was excellent and we got a great deal through Book A Table with a $75 gift certificate for only $50.

We took the train downtown, wandered around the Legislature to look at the lights, then went inside for carolers and free hot chocolate!

It was so beautiful and definitely put me in the spirit of the season!

Star Wars Halloween

The greatest/nerdiest Halloween ever.

We headed out of town to Stony Plain, AB for my cousins Halloween party. It was Star Wars themed!

Everyone totally participated and came all dressed up. And we had so much great Star Wars food!
I made Princess Leia cupcakes.

I have such great and nerdy cousins, so it was one of the best Halloween's ever.

When we got home, we tried to take a picture while we were still dressed up and the cat photobombed us!

Kaleido Festival!

sunny 12 °C

We spent the weekend volunteering at Kaleido Festival on 118 Ave. The area has undergone some impressive revitalization and it's so nice to really feel the sense of community.

Kaleido is a family arts festival, so there was dancing, street art, theatre, music, roving artists...

...and even human gargoyles.

There was a lamp post decorating contest that progressed over the course of the weekend.

My favorite artist was the human fountain. A man who is at work at his computer sits in the middle of a kiddy pool. When anyone jumps onto a bike that is attached to the set up, it powers up the water and the fountain springs to life! He was quite the enraged business man.

We look forward to spending a lot more time in the Alberta Avenue/118th Avenue area!

A Few Days in Amsterdam

Last stop before home!

semi-overcast 24 °C

Well, after 8 months of travel we are on our last stop before home.
We decided to meet our friends from home who are just starting their European adventures. What better place to catch up than Amsterdam!

I had been to Amsterdam a few years prior, but this time was much more relaxed and it was fun to travel with people from home.

Our friends rented some bikes before we got there and encouraged us to try. Apparently Dutch bikes are much harder to ride. We looked really silly and they took pictures (Unfortunately... or maybe fortunately for us... their laptop with all the pictures was before we got to see them).

We mostly just hung out with our friends and walked around to look at the different neighborhoods.

Goodbye Europe! Goodbye 8 month adventure!

A week in Germany

We spent a week visiting our friend Toby whom we met in Ecuador. He lives in Frankfurt, Germany.
He was our local tour guide which made an amazing experience.
We weren't really planning on going to Germany originally, but you can't pass up the opportunity to stay at someone's home and get shown around.

The scenery was beautiful and we did lots of wining and dinning.
In fact, we became very acquianted with the expression "Prost!" which is equivalent to "Cheers!".

We even got to sneak in a visit with another German friend that we met in Ecuador, the lovely Bianca!

We toured some castles.

Amazingly, these were some of the first castles we toured that actually looked how I would imagine they would.
They were very different from the palaces of Spain.

Heidelberg was one of my favourite German cities.

We visited some wineries and went to a wine festival.

It was great to see our friends and meet some new ones! We had a nice little taste of Germany and would definitely like to go back!
